In a recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, high physical activity that results in high daily step count decreases mortality rates. According to the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, researchers wanted to investigate how step count can help with physical health. This research helped us understand why exercise and movement results in better health.
The study looked at 4800 participants where they were using a meter for seven days and were followed for many years after. They calculated the association between mortality in step number and intensity and after demographic adjustment, behavioral risk factors, body mass index and health status at the start of activity, The researcher showed that taking about 4000 steps per day which is considered low for adults and taking 8000 steps per day was associated with a 51% lower risk for all cost mortality.
This research showed that taking 12,000 steps per day was associated with 65% lower risk compared to those who took 4000 steps. The same research did not show any association between higher step intensity and all cost mortality after adjusting for the total number of steps per day.
In conclusion, physical activity has many benefits that reduces risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancers. Physical activity also helps with our mood and overall mental health well-being.
